Biofeedback therapy is a non-invasive therapy that helps patients regain control over physiological functions such as heart rate, muscle tension, and breathing. It is provided in real-time monitoring and live feedback. By increasing self-awareness of the body's responses, biofeedback helps demonstrate how to improve self-regulating skills that support physical and mental wellbeing.
Sensors placed on the body measure biological signals like brainwaves (EEG), heart rate variability (HRV), skin conductance, and muscle activity. These signals are displayed on a screen, allowing the client to observe how their body reacts to stress or relaxation techniques. Through guided practice, clients learn to shift their physiological state, supporting nervous system balance and resilience.
Biofeedback is useful for people of all ages and backgrounds. It's commonly used for anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, chronic pain, insomnia, hypertension, and cognitive disorders like dementia. It is a good alternative for clients who are seeking non-pharmaceutical strategies to reduce chronic pain or symptoms.
While biofeedback does not cure Alzheimer’s or dementia, it offers meaningful benefits in managing associated symptoms. By improving autonomic regulation, sleep quality, and emotional resilience, biofeedback can reduce agitation, support attention, and promote moments of clarity and calm in individuals with cognitive decline. It also supports caregivers by helping regulate their own stress responses.
Currently, there is no regulatory authority that monitors Biofeedback Therapy in Ontario, Canada. The Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (BCIA) currently sets the professional standards for clinicians practicing biofeedback.
