Headaches are among the most common health complaints, but not all headaches are created equal. While many can be linked to temporary stress or dehydration, some - like tension headaches and cluster headaches - are recurring conditions that can significantly affect daily life.
Medication is currently a popular form of headache treatment and management, and they can help relieve acute pain. There are many alternative non-pharmaceutical based interventions to also support healing.
Non-pharmaceutical management of headaches include routine exercise, stress management, documenting/journaling, acupuncture, biofeedback therapy, and more which have been clinically shown to reduce headache symptoms.
The pathophysiology of a headache differs from a migraine. Migraines are neurological conditions involving changes in brain activity and blood vessel function. Neurovascular dilation of intracranial vessels, trigeminal nerve activation, and serotonin, are thought to play roles in migraines.
They are common amongst individuals aged 18 to 44 and can occur with auras (visual/sensory/speech changes) or without them.
Alternatively, headaches are classified as primary (e.g. tension, cluster) or secondary (due to another cause, such as infection) and occur episodically or chronically.
In addition to medication, both can be treated with non-pharmaceutical based interventions delivered by trained Registered Nurses.
