Neurofeedback, also known as EEG biofeedback, is a brain-based therapy that helps individuals train and regulate their brainwave activity. By using real-time feedback from EEG sensors, clients learn to shift their brain into healthier, more balanced patterns - supporting improved mood, focus, and emotional resilience.
During a session, sensors placed on the scalp monitor electrical activity in the brain. This activity is displayed through visual or auditory feedback (like a video game or music that changes in response to brainwaves). Over time, the brain learns to produce more optimal patterns, reducing symptoms linked to anxiety, emotional dysregulation, sleep problems, and more.
Though not a cure, neurofeedback can be a supportive therapy for those living with Depression, Anxiety, Alzheimer’s Disease, and other conditions. By training the brain to sustain more stable and efficient patterns, neurofeedback may help improve attention, reduce agitation, stabilize mood, and enhance quality of life — even in the early to moderate stages of cognitive decline.
Currently, there is no regulatory authority that monitors Neurofeedback Therapy in Ontario, Canada. The Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (BCIA) currently sets the professional standards for clinicians practicing neurofeedback.
It is commonly viewed as a psychotherapeutic technique / modality, and is often covered under extended health benefits for psychotherapy.
