Understanding Stress & Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Stress is a natural part of life and can be helpful in many instances. But what happens when it becomes prolonged, and overwhelming?


Chronic Stress and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, as diagnosed by the criteria set out in the DSM-5, can negatively impact both the mind and the body. Like depression and anxiety, when chronic stress disorders are left untreated, it can impact daily function. 


While chronic stress is generalized stress that is persistent for more than 6 months, PTSD is a specific condition that can develop after exposure to traumatic events. PTSD symptoms can include:


  • Flashbacks, nightmares, and night terrors
  • hypervigilance
  • Avoidant behaviour strategies, and more.


As Natalie Goldberg famously stated - "Stress is an ignorant state. It believes everything is an emergency."

Our Approach

At Ontario RN, we educate you on the difference between daily stressors, chronic stress, and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. Our providers deliver evidence-based techniques in treating chronic stress disorders, such as muscle relaxation techniques, biofeedback therapy, and autogenic training to support wellness. 


While we do not prescribe or manage medication at Ontario RN, medication can play an important role in a comprehensive treatment plan. For pharmaceutical interventions, we encourage that you consult with your primary care provider.
